Hōkyōintō Stone Pagoda (Important Cultural Property) Built in 1348, the Hōkyōintō stone pagoda dates back to the time when the Murakami KAIZOKU, first appeared in historical records. A Hōkyōintō is a stone pagoda that contains mantras for good health, peace, and longevity. A lotus-patterned base sits between the foundation and the main body. This distinctive design, known as the "Ochi style," can be found in the region now called the Shimanami Kaido—the area from the Geiyo Islands to the Imabari Plain in the Seto Inland Sea. This stonework is a cornerstone of north-south cultural exchange.
